How to Prepare for Your First Reiki Session

Congratulations on taking the first step toward energy healing! Whether you are coming for stress relief, pain management, or simple curiosity, a little preparation can help you get the most from your Reiki experience. Here is everything you need to know before your first session at Reiki Portland.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session, so choose layers that allow you to relax completely. Avoid tight belts, restrictive jewelry, or heavy fabrics. Think yoga clothes or soft loungewear.

Hydrate Before and After

Drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to your session. Reiki can stimulate the body's natural detoxification processes, and proper hydration supports this flow. Continue drinking water after your session to help flush any released toxins.

Limit Caffeine and Heavy Meals

Try to avoid caffeine and large meals for at least two hours before your appointment. Caffeine can make it harder to relax, while a heavy meal may cause discomfort while lying on the treatment table. A light snack is perfectly fine.

Arrive Early and Set Intentions

Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early. This gives you time to fill out any intake forms, settle into the peaceful environment, and begin to relax. Before your session, take a moment to set a personal intention. This could be as simple as "I am open to healing" or as specific as "I seek relief from my shoulder tension." Your intention helps focus the energy flow.

What Happens During the Session

The Experience

You will lie comfortably on a padded treatment table in a warm, dimly lit room. Soft music may be playing. Your practitioner will gently place their hands on or slightly above various areas of your body, typically starting at the head and moving down to the feet. Each position is held for several minutes.

What You Might Feel

Sensations vary from person to person. Common experiences include warmth, tingling, gentle pulsing, waves of relaxation, or emotional release. Some people see colors or imagery. Others simply drift into a peaceful, meditative state. There is no right or wrong experience.

Aftercare Tips

After your session, take it easy for the rest of the day if possible. You may feel deeply relaxed, emotionally tender, or wonderfully energized. Continue hydrating, eat nourishing foods, and give yourself permission to rest. Journaling about your experience can also be a powerful way to integrate the healing.
